1. A Genuinely Diverse Expat Population

I've visited plenty of expat hotspots and often found a sea of fellow Americans. Pattaya is different: with an expat population estimated around 180,000, less than 10% are from North America, and roughly twice as many are British. My contacts list reads like a roll-call of nationalities. It's the people, not just the palm trees, that make a place worth staying in. More on the community in The Expat Community.

2. City and Beach, Without Choosing

Back home I had to pick between city life and beach life. Here I don't: restaurants, pubs, theatres, live music, malls, gyms and an international airport all sit minutes from the sand. A five-star rooftop dinner or coconut water on the beach, both are on the table the same evening. For a closer look at the neighbourhoods that make this work, read What Area in Pattaya Has My Name Written on It?.

3. It Keeps Getting Better

My first visit left me unimpressed, dirty beaches, garish tourism, too many drunks. Since then the beaches have cleaned up, transport has improved, and shopping and entertainment options have multiplied. Better tourism is arriving, and the city keeps pace with it.

4. Close Enough to Bangkok to Matter

Motorway 7 already cut travel time from Bangkok in half, turning Pattaya into a genuine weekend escape for the capital. A high-speed rail link will soon bring that down to about 30 minutes, which should only help property values. See Thailand's High-Speed Railway Project Greenlit for Construction for the details.

5. Life Runs on Familiar Faces

Condo staff who've been with me for a decade, market vendors who know my order before I say it, a realtor who finds me a reliable tenant year after year. It adds up to something that feels like a village, wrapped inside a proper city. That, more than anything, is why I'm a proud Pattayan.
